Meaning unknown, probably of Phoenician origin, Dido, also known as Elissa, was the queen of Carthage in Virgil’s Aeneid, where she dies by throwing herself onto a funeral pyre after Aeneas leaves her; Virgil based this account on earlier Greco-Roman sources.
