Meaning and history
Dóris comes from the Greek name Δωρίς (Doris), meaning “Dorian woman,” referring to the Dorians, a Greek tribe that occupied the Peloponnese beginning in the 12th century BC. In Greek mythology, Doris was a sea nymph and one of the many children of Oceanus and Tethys. The name began to be used in English in the 19th century, and a well-known bearer was the American actress Doris Day (1924–2019).
