Meaning and history
Dunstan comes from the Old English elements dunn, meaning “dark,” and stan, meaning “stone.” It was borne by a 10th-century saint who served as archbishop of Canterbury and was used occasionally in the Middle Ages before dying out after the 16th century. The name was revived in the 19th century by the Tractarian movement.
