Meaning and history
Durga is a Hindu warrior goddess whose name means “unattainable” or “unassailable” in Sanskrit. She is usually shown with multiple arms and riding a lion or tiger, and the Puranas say she was created to defeat the buffalo demon Mahishasura. She is sometimes regarded as a fierce aspect of Parvati, Shiva’s wife, and in Shaktism she is seen as a major form of the supreme goddess Mahadevi.
