Meaning and history
Edgar combines the Old English elements ead, meaning "wealth" or "fortune," and gar, meaning "spear." Borne by the 10th-century king Edgar the Peaceful, it faded after the Norman Conquest and was revived in the 18th century, partly through Walter Scott's The Bride of Lammermoor (1819). Notable bearers include writers Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) and Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875–1950), and painter Edgar Degas (1834–1917).
