The Old English name combines ēad, “wealth” or “fortune,” with weard, “guardian,” yielding “guardian of prosperity.” It was borne by several Anglo-Saxon kings and saints, including Edward the Confessor. Notable bearers include Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, creator of The Scream, and Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Regional spelling and pronunciation do not change the underlying Old English origin.
