Meaning and history
Egbert means “bright edge,” derived from the Old English elements ecg, meaning “edge” or “blade,” and beorht, meaning “bright.” It was the name of kings of Kent and Wessex, as well as two English saints, and although it fell out of use after the Norman Conquest, it was revived in the 19th century.
