Meaning and history
Æþelbeorht is an Old English masculine name combining æþele, “noble,” with beorht, “bright” or “famous,” giving “noble and bright.” It is the Anglo-Saxon cognate of Adalbert and developed into forms including Albert. Æthelberht of Kent was a sixth-century king whose conversion aided the establishment of Christianity in Anglo-Saxon England; he is venerated as a saint. The letters Æ and þ are historically correct. Modern bearers are exceptionally rare.
