Meaning and history
Æðelflæd is an Old English feminine name formed from æðele, “noble,” and flæd, “beauty” or “splendour.” Related spellings were borne by several Anglo-Saxon noblewomen, including Æthelflæd, daughter of Alfred the Great, who ruled Mercia in the early tenth century and became known as the Lady of the Mercians.
