Meaning and history
Elian has more than one modern origin. In Dutch it can be a variant of names beginning with Eli, such as Elijah or Elisabeth, while the accented Spanish form Elian is also used independently. The name became internationally familiar through Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban boy at the center of a major custody dispute in 2000; another bearer is baseball player Elian Herrera.
