Meaning and history
Elmo began as a short form of names ending in the Old German element helm, meaning “helmet” or “protection,” such as Guglielmo and Anselmo, and was also derived from Erasmus through the old Italian short form Ermo. Saint Elmo, another name for Saint Erasmus, was a 4th-century martyr and patron of sailors, and Saint Elmo’s fire is traditionally seen as a sign of his protection. In English-speaking countries, the name is now strongly associated with the red Muppet character from Sesame Street.
