Meaning and history
A French-influenced variant of Louise, the feminine form of Louis, ultimately from the Germanic Hludwig, combining hlud "famous" and wig "battle," hence "famous warrior." It is closely related to Eloise, the name of Kay Thompson's mischievous fictional child who lives at New York's Plaza Hotel.
