Meaning and history
Æðelstan is an Old English masculine name, more conventionally written Æthelstan, formed from elements meaning “noble” and “stone.” Its most famous bearer was King Æthelstan, who ruled from 924 to 939 and is often regarded as the first king of a unified England. Several medieval churchmen also bore the name.
