Elvīra is the Spanish form of a Visigothic name recorded from the 10th century in forms such as Geloyra and Giluira. Its meaning is uncertain, but it may come from the Gothic element gails, meaning “happy” or “spear,” combined with wers, meaning “friendly,” “agreeable,” or “true.” The name was used by members of the royal families of León and Castille and also appears as a character name in Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni (1787).
