Meaning and history
Meaning unknown. The name first appeared in the late 19th century and was used for the main character in Mary Young Ridenbaugh’s novel Enola; or, her Fatal Mistake (1886). The aircraft that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima was named Enola Gay after the pilot’s mother, who had been named for the novel’s character.
