Erasmus is derived from the Greek ἐράσμιος (erasmios), meaning “beloved” or “desired.” It was the name of Saint Erasmus, also known as Saint Elmo, a 4th-century martyr and patron saint of sailors, as well as that of the Dutch Renaissance scholar Erasmus.
