Meaning and history

Erebus is the Latinized form of Greek Erebos, meaning “deep darkness” or “gloom.” In Greek mythology, Erebus is a primordial deity personifying darkness and also the dark region through which souls pass toward the underworld. The Antarctic volcano Mount Erebus was named after a nineteenth-century exploration ship, itself named for the mythological figure. As a modern human name it is extremely rare, and reliable real-life bearers are not established.
