Erwin is a name derived from the Old German form Hariwini, made up of heri meaning “army” and wini meaning “friend,” and it may also have been influenced by Eberwin. A notable bearer was Erwin Schrödinger (1887–1961), the Austrian physicist known for his contributions to quantum theory.
