Meaning and history
Esmeralda means “emerald” in Spanish and Portuguese and ultimately derives from Greek σμάραγδος (smaragdos). Victor Hugo used the name in his 1831 novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame for the Romani girl loved by Quasimodo, and it has been used occasionally in the English-speaking world since then.
