Ettore is the Italian form of Hector. Hector comes from Greek Hektor, traditionally connected with a verb meaning “to hold fast” or “to defend.” In Homer’s Iliad, Hector is the leading Trojan warrior, admired for courage, loyalty, and devotion to his family before being killed by Achilles. Notable bearers include Italian automobile designer Ettore Bugatti and Italian architect and designer Ettore Sottsass. The name’s classical association is heroic but ultimately tragic.
