Meaning and history

Eugene is the English form of Latin Eugenius, from Greek Eugenios and eugenes, meaning "well born" from elements meaning "good" and "born." Borne by several saints and four popes, it was uncommon in medieval Western Europe but gained prominence through Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736), a French-born Austrian general; American playwright Eugene O'Neill (1888–1953) was another notable bearer.
