Meaning and history
Euphemia means “to use words of good omen,” from Greek εὐφημέω (euphemeo), a form of εὖ (eu), meaning “good,” and φημί (phemi), meaning “to speak” or “to declare.” Saint Euphemia was an early martyr from Chalcedon, and the name has been historically common in Scotland, where it was sometimes used as an Anglicized form of Oighrig.
