Meaning and history
Latinized form of Greek Εὐρώπη (Europe), meaning “wide face” from εὐρύς (eurys) “wide” and ὄψ (ops) “face, eye.” In Greek mythology, Europa was a Phoenician princess abducted by Zeus, who came to Crete in the form of a bull; she became the first queen of Crete and later bore Minos by Zeus. The continent of Europe is said to be named after her, though her name is more likely derived from the continent. This is also the name of a moon of Jupiter.
