Filomena is the Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Lithuanian form of Philomena. The name is usually connected with Greek philos, “friend” or “beloved,” and menos, “strength” or “spirit,” though its exact ancient formation is debated. Its Christian popularity grew through devotion to Saint Philomena, whose supposed relics were discovered in Rome in 1802, although her historical identity is uncertain. Notable bearers include Portuguese television presenter Filomena Cautela and Cape Verdean singer Filomena Maricoa.
