Finbar is an Anglicized form of the Irish name Fionnbharr, combining fionn, “fair” or “white,” and barr, “head” or “summit,” traditionally interpreted as “fair-haired.” Saint Finbarr was a sixth-century bishop and the patron saint of Cork; tradition credits him with founding the monastery that developed into the city.
