From an Irish surname, an Anglicized form of Ó Fionnagáin, which comes from the given name Fionnagán, a diminutive of Fionn. It is also the surname of a relatively minor character in James Joyce’s 1939 novel Finnegans Wake, whose title was based on the 19th-century Irish ballad Finnegan’s Wake.
