Anglicized form of the Irish Fionnuala, from fionn "white, fair" and guala "shoulder." In Irish legend, Fionnuala was one of the Children of Lir, transformed into a swan and doomed to spend 900 years on Ireland's waters. Irish actress Fionnuala Flanagan (1941-), known for The Others and Waking Ned, is a notable bearer.
