Fortunato is an Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese masculine name from the Latin Fortunatus, meaning “fortunate,” “prosperous,” or “blessed.” Several early Christian saints bore Fortunatus, helping preserve the name after antiquity. In literature, Fortunato is the doomed carnival-goer in Edgar Allan Poe’s story “The Cask of Amontillado,” where his name is deliberately ironic. Notable real-life bearers include Italian Futurist artist Fortunato Depero and Italian singer Fortunato Zampaglione.
