Meaning and history
From an Old German name meaning a member of the Germanic tribe the Franks, who settled in what is now France, Belgium, and the Netherlands in the 3rd and 4th centuries; their tribal name is possibly derived from a type of spear they used, from Proto-Germanic * frankô. Since medieval times, the many forms of this name have commonly been confused with those of Francis, and in modern usage it is sometimes a short form of Francis or Franklin. The name was brought to England by the Normans. Notable bearers include author L. Frank Baum (1856–1919), architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959), and singer Frank Sinatra (1915–1998).
