Meaning and history
Freek is a Dutch masculine diminutive of Frederik or Frederik-related names. Frederik derives from Germanic elements frid, “peace,” and ric, “ruler” or “power,” giving the conventional meaning “peaceful ruler.” Freek is now commonly used independently in the Netherlands and should not be confused with the English word freak. Notable bearers include Dutch comedian and writer Freek de Jonge and Dutch wildlife presenter Freek Vonk. The Dutch pronunciation differs from English expectations.
