Meaning and history
Freyr means “lord” in Old Norse and comes from the Germanic root *fraujô. It is the name of a Norse god who may originally have been called Yngvi, with Freyr used as a title. Associated with fertility, sunlight, and rain, he is the husband of the giantess Gerd and, along with his twin sister Freya and father Njord, belongs to the group of deities known as the Vanir.
