Galen is the modern form of the Greek name Γαληνός (Galenos), meaning “calm” from Greek γαλήνη (galene). It was borne by a 2nd-century BC Greco-Roman physician who made important contributions to anatomy and medicine, and in modern times the name is sometimes given in his honor.
