Garnet comes from the English word for the deep-red gemstone, whose name ultimately derives from a medieval Latin term associated with pomegranate seeds. It began to be used as a given name in the English-speaking world during the nineteenth century, when gemstone and nature names became fashionable. British field marshal Garnet Wolseley and American artist Garnet Jex are notable bearers.
