Meaning and history
The name comes from the title Genghis, or Chinggis, Khan, meaning “universal ruler,” which Temujin, founder of the Mongol Empire, adopted in the late 12th century. Known for both military brilliance and brutality toward civilians, he went on to conquer much of Asia and Eastern Europe.
