Genya is a Russian familiar form used for both Yevgeny and Yevgeniya, masculine and feminine forms of Eugene. Eugene derives from Greek Eugenios, meaning “well born” or “noble,” from eu, “good,” and genos, “birth” or “kind.” Genya can also arise independently in Jewish and other communities, so the Russian derivation is not universal. Notable bearers include Russian-American poet Genya Turovskaya and American rock singer Genya Ravan.
