Meaning and history
Gervase is an English form of the Late Latin name Gervasius. It is probably Germanic, and its first element is often connected with “spear,” but the complete derivation and meaning remain uncertain. Saints Gervasius and Protasius were early Christian martyrs especially venerated in Milan, helping spread the name in medieval Europe. Notable bearers include English author and educator Gervase Phinn and British historian Gervase Rosser. Jervis is a related English form.
