Gil has several distinct origins. In Hebrew it is a masculine name meaning “joy” or “rejoicing.” In Spanish and Portuguese it may derive from the medieval name Giles or function as a short form of Gilberto, while in English it can shorten Gilbert. These traditions have different roots and should not be combined. Notable bearers include Israeli-American violinist Gil Shaham and American poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron. The bearer’s language determines the intended meaning.
