Meaning and history
Originally an Italian short form of Ermenegilda and other names containing the Old German element gelt, meaning “payment, tribute, compensation,” Gilda is also the name of a character in Verdi’s opera Rigoletto (1851) and of a 1946 American film starring Rita Hayworth in the title role.
