Gilead is a biblical place name adopted as a masculine given name. In the Hebrew Bible, Gilead is a mountainous region east of the Jordan River and also appears as a personal and tribal name. Its Hebrew etymology is debated, with traditional interpretations such as “heap of witness” arising from a narrative in Genesis. The phrase “balm of Gilead” became a symbol of healing. A notable bearer is Israeli lawyer, author, and peace negotiator Gilead Sher.
