Meaning and history
Gill has several English uses. It can be a short form of Gillian, a medieval feminine form of Julian, or of Gilbert, a Germanic masculine name meaning “bright pledge.” It may also be transferred from surnames with separate origins. The intended meaning therefore depends on the full name and gender. British actor Gill Gascoine and Australian humanitarian Gill Hicks are notable public bearers of the short form, though both were formally named Jillian or Gillian.
In 2006, 5 babies were recorded with the name Gill, ranking #12,055 among boys.
