Variant spelling of Giselle, from the Germanic gisil, meaning "pledge" or "hostage," reflecting the medieval practice of sending children of noble families as political hostages to secure treaties. The name was popularized by the tragic heroine of Adolphe Adam's 1841 romantic ballet Giselle.
