Russian form of the Old Norse name Guðleifr, from guð “god” and leif “inheritance, legacy.” It was borne by an 11th-century saint of the ruling family of Kievan Rus, who was killed with his brother Boris in the succession struggles after their father Vladimir the Great died and is venerated as a martyr.
