From a Scottish surname derived from Gaelic gleann meaning “valley,” Glenn was borne by American actor Glenn Ford (1916–2006), whose birth name was Gwyllyn, and by American astronaut John Glenn (1921–2016). The name reached its peak popularity in 1962, when Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth, but despite its use by actress Glenn Close (1947–), it has never become established as a feminine name.
