Old English name meaning "friend of God," from god "god" and wine "friend." Godwine, Earl of Wessex (died 1053), was one of the most powerful noblemen in Anglo-Saxon England and the father of King Harold II and of Edith of Wessex, queen to Edward the Confessor.
