From a Scottish surname originally taken from a place in Berwickshire and ultimately from Brythonic elements meaning “spacious fort,” Gordon was first used in honor of Charles George Gordon (1833–1885), the British general who died defending Khartoum in Sudan. The name was fairly popular across the English-speaking world during the 20th century, especially in Scotland and Canada, and reached its peak in both the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1930s before later disappearing from most popularity charts.
