Meaning and history
Gretta is a variant of Greta, a short form of Margaret. Margaret derives from Greek margarites, meaning “pearl,” and became widespread through several Christian saints. American actress Gretta Palmer and Australian singer Gretta Ray are notable bearers.
Gretta moved from #800 to #981 for girls between 1895 and 1898. Its highest annual birth count came in 1895, with 16 births.
