Meaning and history

This name comes from the Old German Gundahar, formed from gunda meaning “war” and heri meaning “army,” making it cognate with Gunnar. It was borne by a semi-legendary 5th-century Burgundian king who appears in the medieval German Nibelungenlied, where he courts the Icelandic queen Brunhild with Siegfried’s help, later betrays Siegfried, and is eventually avenged by Siegfried’s widow Kriemhild, Gunther’s sister. The name was also borne by an 11th-century saint, a hermit in Bavaria and Bohemia.
