Meaning and history
Gustáv possibly means “staff of the Geats,” deriving from Old Norse gautr, meaning “Geat,” and stafr, meaning “staff,” though the root name Gautstafr is not well attested in the Old Norse period. It may alternatively come from the Old Slavic name Gostislav. The name has been borne by six kings of Sweden, including Gustav I Vasa in the 16th century, and by the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt (1862–1918).
