Meaning and history
Guy is the Old French form of the Germanic name Wido, probably derived from an element meaning "wood." The Normans introduced it to England, where it was common until its association with Guy Fawkes, a participant in the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605; literary characters helped revive it in the nineteenth century. Notable modern bearers include filmmaker Guy Ritchie and chef and television presenter Guy Fieri.
