Meaning and history
Gwenllian is a Welsh feminine name beginning with gwen, meaning “white,” “fair,” or “blessed.” The second element’s precise interpretation is debated, so translations of the entire compound should be treated cautiously. Princess Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd became a Welsh symbol of resistance after leading forces against the Normans and dying in battle in 1136. Another medieval bearer, Gwenllian ferch Llywelyn, was the daughter of the last native Prince of Wales.
